Repair/Seal a section of bathroom wall after removing tile.

I had to knock out a block of tiles behind my new toilet install because the rough in was a little short. The tiles are a horrible pink and black checkerboard and the previous owner painted them (project for another day).

But... since I have bare wall now, what should I do to seal the edges and surface. There are some gouges from scraping off the adhesive. I'm thinking maybe I should use spackle or some other drywall compound, caulk the edges, then prime/paint? Or should I build up the raw tile edge better with something to keep them stable? I'll remove the tank while I'm working on the wall.

Why not just use some thin set and new tiles?

The tiles won't fit behind the tank, unless they are considerably thinner than the ones that were already there. Eventually I'll redo the whole bathroom, but the current tile job isn't nice enough to try to match. My biggest concern is water sealing and stability.

That area does not need to be water proofed.
Now would be the perfect time to just get all that old stuff off and redo it right.
A toilet can be moved out away from the wall another 1/2" in most cases.
Not concerned about looks then just stick up a piece of bead board, skim coat it and prime and paint two coats.
Both ways will look poopy but will work.
