Refinishing kitchen cabinets

I have tried a variety of varnish strippers/removers and deglazers and nothing is cutting away the coating on the hickory cabinets in my kitchen. I removed some varnish at first, (I have cleaned my test door 3 times) but there still seems to be something on them keeping the stain from taking. I want them stained a darker color but after stripping, scrubbing, and scraping I still cannot get the darker stain to adhere as it does to bare wood. Not even close. I am running out of products and money to try and find a solution and need some new ideas. Please help me!!!

Try a product liquid sand and see if that helps, it has worked for me
