Redoing backsplash with stone, tape backerboard/drywall joints?

I'm working on re-doing the backsplash in my kitchen. I tore out the old tile backsplash yesterday, which required taking out the drywall too, couldn't get the tile off without mangling the drywall. I'm putting ledger stone (the 6x24" strips) in as a replacement, which requires concrete backerboard.

I have the drywall cut even with the bottom edge of the cabinets and the top edge of the counter. When I put up the new Hardibacker, do I need to find a way to tape the horizontal joints here? I'm not sure how I would get the tape in behind the countertop or behind the lower edge of the cabinets.

Thanks!

I would not be worried about taping - but I would be tempted to toe nail in some nailers to support the backer on top and bottom.

Ditto. If you ever have to do it again. Leave about an 1 1/2" top and bottom to make it easy to tape in the cement board.

I can do supports top and bottom, good idea. Thanks for the tip. I won't worry about taping.

One other thing...I had to cut out past the end of the cabinet/countertop behind the fridge. I haven't cut all the way to the next stud yet since I wasn't sure the best way to finish this part. Should I continue the cut to the next stud and patch with backer, maybe shimming the backer to make up the difference in thickness? Or should I stop the backer at the last stud before the end of the cabinets and sheetrock to the left of there behind the fridge?

Another option would be to screw a backing piece of 2 x 4/6 at the end of the cut and another one at the end of the cement board. Drywall the spot behind the fridge and mud/tape the drywall.

*edit*

Also add backing along the horizontal drywall seams.

Here's a better pic. I'm pretty happy with how it's turning out. Need to put a dimmer on the new under cabinet lights, man are they bright.

Got a chance to countersink one of the outlet covers tonight. Wasn't sure how it was going to turn out but I think it's pretty good.

I have about a 1/4" to 3/8" gap between the top of the stone and the bottom of the cabinets. Any suggestions on how to fill or finish this off?

Tape off. Caulk the gap and rub on the stone dust. You can make the dust with hammer.
