re-using concrete backer board

I'm remodeling my kitchen and I've just removed the old tile from the backsplash. The concrete backer board is in pretty good shape other than not being totally smooth because of the old tile's mastic.

Can I successfully float my new tile on the old backer board? Any threads I've seen about this topic indicate that I should replace the backer board but this is just the backsplash in the kitchen and it's only 3' high and it seems like yanking out the backer board and putting in a new one is over-kill... it's really just decorative and it's not like it's my shower where the integrity of it all needs to be perfect.

By the way - I realize that I'm being lazy and that this is obviously not the right way to do it.

Any thoughts or tips?

You are not being lazy---that is going to cost you time and aggravation---

In a word--Yes--if it's structurally sound you can go over it---skim coat it back to flat---set your tiles--

The definition of lazy : The love of ease.
