Re-Caulking Kitchen Backsplash - Help?

I have caulking between my backsplash and counter in my kitchen. It has cracked (20 years old) and needs to be removed and redone. The gap opens and closes with warm and cold temps. Is it better to caulk it when the seam is more open (coincides when it's cold outside) or when it is more closed (warm outside)? Which will be best? Does it matter? Thanks.

May want to chek how the cabinets are attached to the walls and the top to the cabinets to see if you can attach it better so it does not move.

Caulk is at the back of the counter between the countertop and tile backsplash.

Flexible caulk should account for the differences.

How big a gap do you have? If it is wide, caulking is not the answer.

It's not wide. If it was, what would the answer be? Just wondering.
