pre-form Curits Niche(duk) and cbu jts

question 1. Tileman installed preform niche (custis DUK niche) over the CBU whereas limited manufacturer directions of the niche shows niche to be installed behind cbu. Tileman stated placing niche behind cbu will push the cbu board out. He silicon behind the niche flanges and along the edge of the flanges. Also regard rolled along the edges. is this an acceptable installation procedure ?????

q2. Shoud the cbu horizontal jts be coverd with a tape in thinset. Tileman only place a little extra redgard at the jts No tape or thinset. I cbu board have already been redgard and ready to tile.

Should I stop the tileman from installing wall tile until the jts are tapes. His position is it is not required.

Question 1: The installation contradicts the manufacturer's directions. It should be installed over the CBU. Water could leak between the niche and CBU.

Question 2: If the redgard doesn't completely seal the joint, you have a place for water to get through. Not taping isn't the end of the world but you have the potential for tile/grout cracks.

I would redo the niche.

Dan. Thanks for the response.

Tile man did set the flanges of the box over the cbu board. It appears it water got into the inside of the niche it would drain in front of the cbu board which has redgard and not behind it. He started this is a better way to install this niche b/c placed behind cbu will push the cbu out and need to ensure the jts are well sealed or water can leak between box and cbu.

he coming to start tiling this afternoon.
