new shower floor grout turning blue

The contractors grouted our master bath yesterday. Both the shower floor and the room floor use Polyblend pewter color but shower floor grout is sanded and the room floor one uses unsanded due to different grout size. The unsanded floor grout is the gray we expected however the shower grout is definitely blue with some efflorescence on top at the moment. I haven't touched it by hand so don't know if it rubs off. Has anyone experienced this before?

I am thinking either the bag of grout is mislabeled or the contractor screwed up something. But either way, if indeed I have blue grout how can I remedy the situation? The shower floor is 1 by 3 inch porcelain mosaic so it has a lot of grout. Is taking the grout out and redoing it going to take a long time? Will it damage the tiles? How about the dust from it (we are expecting a baby)? Should I call my contractor this weekend to tell them about it?

Thanks for any help. This situation is rather upsetting when we are so close to be done.

Call the contractor----he's in the drivers seat on this one---if the grout must be removed, the sooner the better---

How is the shower built? What kind of pan and waterproofing---you don't want to be removing grout from a surface membrane pan---

The shower was built with schluter system so there is the membrane over cement pan over subfloor. When you say you don't want to remove grout from a surface membrane pan, does that mean we are screwed big time here?

It is very possible to cut the membrane while removing the grout-----so yes--you have an unpleasant situation there---call that contractor----if he is good he may have an answer---

Grey grout has blue pigments as part of the color mix---I have a few ideas, but he's the one on site---see what he has to say.

I am really hoping they won't have to rip out everything and redo it. They did a good job with everything else. When they did the thinset I noticed that they put a lot on the back. Would that help? I read that you only need to remove the top 2/3 grout to redo?

I sent the GC a message about this just now. Hopefully it can be resolved. But this is definitely not normal right? Grout can dry a different shade (lighter or darker) but can it dry a entirely different hue?

I wet a small rag and rubbed on the grout at a corner. There is blue stuff on the rag. What does that mean??

Sounds like a bad batch of grout----to much pigment---wash the tile and see what you get----

Here is a photo. You can see the curb grout color which is the pewter we want for everything. And the very blue grout we got on the floor mosaic.
