mortar for bathtub

Our new whirlpool tub needs a mortar bed. Do we lay the mortar directly on the subfloor? We had planned to replace the current underlayment with ditra - can that go under the mortar, or is that just a waste of money?

Thank you for any assistance!

Use masons mortar ---Right onto the subfloor---no benefit putting Ditra under the tub

No reason to spend the DITRA under the tub.

The mortar bed (usually sandmix) is placed directly on the floor but you should first put down a piece of plastic or roofing felt or something to separate the mix from the subfloor.:)

We are removing the walls, and just because its easier, are thinking of installing 1/4 drywall right over the existing ceiling. This would avoid having to move the insulation while we work. The house is a ranch. What are your thoughts on this? Could this action result in moisture buildup between the layers and problems down the road? The ceilings are plenty high - 8 feet.

We appreciate your help!

Overlaying drywall is done all the time without issue.

You should be fine.----Mike----
