Mitre or butt joint for laminate countertops with roundover edge?
I've got some IKEA laminate countertops that I want to install in my kitchen. I'm trying to determine the best way to join these at the "L" corner that I've got.
The counters are basic laminate over particleboard with no pre-formed backsplash and a double roundover front edge.
The instructions say to butt join and use their stainless filler strip to cover the roundover at the joint, but I don't think I'd like the look of that.
While I'd prefer a mitre, I've read that mitreing a countertop is a dicey proposition for a DIYer, so am wondering what other options are?
I had thought about routing/cutting off the roundover on one of the boards where the two counters meet, but wasn't sure if that would end up looking reasonable or not.
Mitred joint would look better, but is more difficult to get right.
It will take several/many 'test fit' attempts and a ton of patience.
Biscuits, glue, and joiner hardware will all be required.
Look for a countertop or kitchen manufacturing outfit that can do the mitre cuts for a nominal fee. It is worth the money.
