Looking for feedback & advice on how to make kitchen cabinets look good!

Need help with some ideas for these 1970's cabinets. After washing all the grease off I had taken some of the finish off...And the bottom cabinets are so bad I just sanded them down. Then I put some wood conditioner on them.
1. Anyone know what stain color would match or compliment the top cabinets? ( was thinking of going with a darker color as there seems to be so much variation in the wood color on the bottom cabinets...sure it is from years of water, dirt & grease on them)

2. Went and bought an orbital sander as It seems all the youtube video's use that kind of sander for this. However when I put the sander on the wood with pressure it stops the sander...Am I doing something wrong???
3. My palm sander works fine...Can I use that instead???

4. Some of the top cabinets have the finish coming off from wear & cleaning...Any suggestion on an east fix for these?

I think I would use a stripper on it first to get all the gummy varnish / paint off..

On the Cabinets I am refinishing I did use a stripper before sanding.
On the cabinets I am not refinishing I didn't use stripper.
