I recently completed my kitchen remodel, and though I would share some a few before and after pics. I did 95% of the work myself, and only hired out to install the electrical for the microwave, as well as cut the counter and install the sink. The cabinets are stock from Lowes, in which I painted, sanded some areas, stained the entire cabinet (what was painted) and wiped down, and then 3 coats of poly. I have a dark laminate floor to go along with it all. It took me a little over a year, but I got it complete.
Bottom two pics are before.

Countertop is two pieces of in-stock laminate that Lowes sold.
Looks good.. We also just installed a kitchen with pre-form c-tops and tiled the backsplash similer to yours.. Its a nice look for not alot of $$
My brother and I spent 2 hours in Lowes figuring out what we should do with the backsplash. After we decided and went back home, we changed our mind and spent another hour figuring it out with what we got. And yes, it didn't cost a whole lot of money. While it would be nice to have that expensive countertop, this looks just fine for the house. It's a whole heck of a lot nicer than what was there previously. The cabinet drawers and doors open. I have more countertop area, plus it's level. And it's always nice to have good lighting around the sink. The lights I installed are perfect to have on in the evening.
