kitchen cupboards


my husband built me beautiful oak cupboards a few yrs ago he put 3 coats of polyurethane on them they are pretty shiny.Now i want to stain them dark walnut.what should i do
o

I don't trust strippers and poly. I'd start sanding...

All and I mean all of the poly has to go. The stain has to be able to soak into the bare wood.
Never been a big fan of dark cabinets, seems to make the whole room seem darker and uninviting. But ha it's your house.
It's also going to hide all the natural beauty of the darker grans in the oak.

Curious how the husband feels about this...

If I built cabinets from scratch for my wife, she better plan on taking them to the grave with her... And yes, you will have to pull all of that poly outor your stain will not take properly or evenly..
