help! mosaic backspash with 6-inch granite plus slide-in range?

Hey all,

We have granite counters with a 6 inch matching "backsplash".
We also have an old "slide-in" range. See picture attachment.

Question 1: Is it bad practice to put a mosaic tile wall backsplash above the granite one? Or should I pull the granite one? I'm fearful I'll discover a crack or chips on the back of the counter hidden under the granite backsplash. Plus - it's way easier to leave it and put tile above.

Question 2: We may replace our slide-in range with a freestanding model vs. another slide-in. For those who aren't familiar, the slide-ins have no top/back on it - all controls are on the front face. But freestanding models have the controls in a head unit on top/back which sticks up about 10 inches.

Assuming I leave all the granite as-is - is it wacky to have a 6-inch granite backsplash running behind a range?

Thanks!

Tiling above the granite splash is done all the time----the hardest part is choosing the tile.

A skilled granite counter top company could cut that stove opening and back splash ---a call or two is in order.---Mike--

Add tile, it's a great look. Don't forget to clear caulk the seam using 100% silicon (anywhere near water!).

I chose not to have the granite backsplash and went with tile.

If anyone doesn't know the palmetto tree and crescent moon are South Carolina's state flag.

Over the years I have come up with all kinds of things to do with tile installations like that and the conservative nature of everyone around here just won't let it happen.

That is probably one of the nicest things I have ever seen done.

Thanks I really appreciate that! I did all the work myself from decon to putting up the tile. Well I didn't do the granite. It's not perfect but I feel like I did a good job. The wife was the decorator.

JohninSC - did you do anything with the cabinets? We presently have builder-grade wood cabinets with MDF doors/drawer faces and they are painted white.

A neighbor with the same cabinets peeled off the laminate on all the faces (it's coming off for all of us anyway) - then glazed everything with an offwhite/cream look with dark streaks in the glaze. Looks pretty nice.

But I want to keep mine white. The box/wood cabinets are in great shape so I could sand/smooth where needed and repaint fresh white. But not sure whether I should try to make new faces/doors, redo what I have, or buy pre-built.

nice - the previous owner out granite counters in which we like, so I don't know how I'd pull out the old cabs from under them...so we may have to repaint and redoor.
