Hardiebacker and shower pan mortar bed

Just a quick question on 1/2 inch Hardiebacker cement board for a shower. I have read/seen several different methods to installing the Hardiebacker board that goes right down to the sloped mortar bed.

Some said/show the board being installed down to the liner, then the mortar bed being laid and some show the bottom board being installed a 1/4 inch off the already laid sloped mortar bed.

Any help would be great. Thanks!
