hardie board over 3/4" tongue and groove

why cant i just install hardie board over my existing 3/4" tongue and groove sub-floor. and if i can should i use 1/2" or 1/4" or does it not matter.

You need at least one other layer of support over the subfloor, 1/2" min., 3/4 is better, or you will have a bouncy floor. Hardibacker/duroc are not structural. If you are installing tile, you need a VERY stiff floor or you will always have cracking grout/tile.
