Hello,

My name is Angela and I'm new to this site. I'm doing a major gut job on my kitchen. Its about 122sq ft. I have the pot lights in and am stuck in regards to the cabinets. Not sure if I should buy custom or semi-custom! I'm fairly sure about the color and style but the price for what I want is kind of steep! for an 11x10 kitchen how much does semi to custom cabinets cost? I like the soft closing full extension wide drawers. Dont like the skinny ones at all! My kitchen is the meeting spot in my house and I would like it to meet all of my family's needs! I went to a couple of sites that stated I could draw my kitchen in 3d however they are charging! and I need every penny to go into this kitchen!

any advice would help!

Custom cabinets gets a lot of bells/whistles, but doen't make a lot of economical sense. Semi custom usually get you odd sizes. You can find some good quality stock cabinets, but don't look at big box stores stock lines. Avoid particle board cabinets(look for plywood), look for dovetail wood drawers(not plastic). There are options to make cabinets more useful, roll out drawers, etc. Laminate countertops come in soooo many colors, and are inexpensive, just not as glitzy as granite or solid surface. Post formed tops(rounded fronts and backsplashes) are very inexpensive, but will have a miter joint if you have L arrangements.

I got a price quote for 11000 for custom cabinets ended up buying Shenandoah semicustom cabinets from Lowes. That came in at around 5200 for 15 total cabinets for a small kitchen. Have no compaints about the Shenandoah cabinets so far. The delivery was super fast and accurate. My project thread http://www.diychatroom.com/f49/kitchen-95288/ provides more details.

As far as 3D? Haven't used it, but Google Sketchup comes highly recommended and is free. There is a lot to learn to use it efficiently but they have tons of informative videos.

Unless you have special cabinet needs, any major kitchen cabinet company can supply the required units.
You can use graph paper and a pencil to build the basic cabinet sequence as long as you know what sizes cabinets come in.
Check and cabinet website to get the sizes available.
An "L" shaped kitchen design(in your size kitchen) with maple cabinets will run in the $8-12,000 range depending on the setup and molding package.
