Make sure you have a clean undamaged (not rotted or water-damged) surface. reasonably flat and solid. What to do to achieve this, all depends on your present surface condition.

I've done this before and found the tile glue quite forgiving.
Just scrape off whta you can of the old glue, be careful if you have plasterboard walls as I've found the plasterboard can come off before the glue will shift!

Because the adhesive has a thick consistancy I've found it covers any irregularities and sticks very well over them, as long as you have nothing mssive sticking out you should be fine.

You can even tile over old tiles as long as they are in good condition but doesn't look too good unless you tile right up to the ceiling or dado.

Cheers
