Durock to tub messed up

I messed up...any suggestions on fixing? Problem: I installed the Durock board over the tub flange without furring out the studs. It didn't occur to me until I was installing the tub surround but went ahead and installed the styrene tub surround. All fit ok except at the base (flange) area as a space now exist and movement on the base area causes the caulking to open up. Would it be possible to draw a carefully measured line just above the tub flange and use a 1/16 or 1/32 mason cutter to cut and remove the portion of the Durock to just above the the flange and screw the Durock to the studs? Please advise!

Durock to tub messed up

Have you removed the surround?

Sure the rock could be cut with an angle grinder--protect the tub from the grit and sand---

Without more info ,that's all I have for you------Mike----
