Does a basement kitchen require a extractor fan?

We recently bought a house with a basement apartment, there's no extractor fan in the kitchen (there is one in the bathroom). We are about to rent the apartment but i worry we need to install a extractor fan. Is this necessary or required? I live in Canada.

Call your local codes office. Even if it's not required, it's a very good idea. Cooking vapors are a source of a lot of poor indoor air quality.

Do it right from the beginning if you only want to do the job once. It'll be cheaper in the long term.
