Does all purpose joint compound stick to semigloss ceiling paint in kitchen or bathroom?

Does all purpose joint compound stick to semigloss ceiling paint in the bathroom? I already did it to make an uneven ceiling nice and smooth and now I was told it will fall off. If so, how long will it last? And does the entire area I compound area I applied will come off in one piece and hurt someone? Do I need to remove it...?

Kitchen surfaces are often covered with grease, which must be cleaned for anything to stick. Drywall compound will usually stick to anything, and is so thin, a piece falling should not be a safety issue. If you are building it up to make trim or similar, that is a different issue.

Thanks Bill. I washed the bathroom ceiling pretty thoroughly before applying the joint compound, it was sticky. In the kitchen I only washed the sticky stuff from the walls, the ceiling did not seem to be so bad. Both rooms had been worked on in the past with some stuff that becomes rock hard and cannot be sanded anymore and they created a landscape on the ceiling with mountains and valleys..., then painted it over with semi-gloss paint. To make a long story short there are a few areas with thicker layers.
