Question

determining shower pan size

I am about to replace the tile-walled shower in my master bath with a direct to stud 4 piece kit- 3 walls and floor receptor- because there is a lot of mold and mildew as well as bulging tiles. Here is my problem: how do I measure for the replacement receptor? I know the obvious answer is to tear out the walls and then measure the rough-in area, but I don't want to run into a situation where I have torn out the shower and cannot find something to go back in its place- I can't afford a customer ordered unit, and I do not want to use tile or glue up walls. The shower stall kits are almost all 36" depth front to back but I'm not sure what size my existing one is since it has tile going all the way down to it.

Punch a hole in the wall of the shower--above head height---that will do it and allow you to use the shower while you wait till the new unit arrives.

Go to the bank and get $1500 and have yourself a nice shower pan and surround built.
