Converting Bath to Shower

My wife wants to remove an outdated jetted tub on the second floor of our home and replace it with a shower. My understanding is that I need a 2" drain. The existing bath tub has a 1 1/2" drain. Can I leave the 1 1/2" vent pipe when I replace the drain pipe with a 2" pipe or will I need to make the vent pipe to through the roof 2" also?

You will be fine with a 1 1/2" vent----that will work well and meet code---

Mike is right....1 1/2" vent is fine.....assuming you don't have a bunch of other stuff on it....there is a formula for calculating it....

Just a little background....as I understand it....a bathtub can drain slowly....you have a tub holding the water.....but on a shower, there is no 'tub' to hold the water....hence, it needs to drain out as quick as possible....hence, the 2" drain....

Yikes---1 1/2 VENT is fine---drain must be 2"----

i have a 1 1/2" drain in my shower. NO issues what so ever.

Times change and codes change----2" is code --and hair and crud cause enough slow 2" drains that choosing 1 1/2" when remodeling is just a poor choice.

yeah. there was 1 1/2" in there already. so when i replaced it, i just went with the same size. when i redo the bathroom, i will code it all.
