Caulking around faucet rough-in?

Quick question (Hoping for quick answer!)

Do I need to caulk the space between the shower faucet and cement board or do I just leave it as is? The fixture covers the entire hole.

No caulking around that hole. I'd be double checking to make sure the rest of the fixture is going to work with the hole that tight.
Rember the plastic piece that cover that piece that's stick out of the wall? The hole needed to be big enough for that whole thing to fit in the hole.
And double check that it sticks out far enough allowing for the tile.
Better to find out now then after the tile goes up.
Is there a cover plate with screws in it to attach it to the valve? If so also check that you allowed room for the screws.

I've been tripping over those round black pieces for years

They never seem to stay where they are supposed to - with the faucet assembly

Thanks for quick reply JoeCaption,

Looks like everything fits when I put the fixture on, however it seems to protrude into the shower quite a bit, is this normal? Im thinking I will have to remove the drywall on the other side of the faucet and move the whole assembly back to correct this. any thoughts?

There's suppost to be an access panel on the back side of that wall anyway.
They sell simple snap in ones at Lowes and HD in the plumbing dept. Buy the bigger one so you will have room to work if the need arises.

When I set the valve I predrill the 2 X 4 and toe nail it in place with ceramic coated decking screws, and leave the wall open. That way if I messed up I can adjust it.

Looks like you got skimpy with the thin set when setting that tape, there's to many holes and gaps showing.

There should be a larger hole ---usually about 4"

No caulk---the cover plate has a rubber seal.
