Can I tile on a shower flange?
Im about to install cement board over my shower surround (I talked the wife into doing this over drywall) and have a question. When I install the cement board so the it touches the top of the flange, when I am tiling, do I put thinset right on the flange too? If not, since the flange is 1.5 inches, is 1.5 inches of tile on the cement board enough to stick? I am using 3 inch tile. I suppose I could rearrange and use 4 inch tile if everyone thinks Ill need more mating surface on the cement board. Thanks everyone!

Fill that gap with thinset AS you tile.

Thanks mike! Though I dont understand what you mean. There is no gap to speak of that I can see. Once I put the cement board up, it will be level with the flange. Should I shim the cement board to be sticking out past the flange a bit and then fill the created gap w/ thinset? Thanks again!

Can I tile on a shower flange?
Sorry,Shane---thought you were talking about a tub flange.
If you have access to a table saw--cut some thin furring strips( as thick as the fiberglass) and nail them on to the studs before the backer board. bring the backer down to the top of the surround---cover that flange. That area above the tub surround is not a 'wet area' and could be done with green board safely. Good luck with that thin strip on the right--Might be tough to install---look like liquid nails and gentle screws.--Mike-- Last edited by oh'mike; 08-29-2010 at 09:14 PM. Reason: Duh-- |

Also, I dont have access to a table saw but think I have a decent alternative. If I stack two shims up to the proper width and then chop off the extra, WAH-LAH! Instant proper size shims. I figure if I put two or three of these per stud and screw through them, Ill be good to go. Whatcha think?

That would be a cobbled-up mess now wouldn't it? Why not go buy a few pieces of "lattice" and use them?
