Can I mix sanded and unsanded grout of the same brand and color?

Hi,

Can I mix sanded and unsanded grout of the same brand and color to use it in 1/8" spaces?

Thanks.

Thanks.
And why would you want to do that?
My off the cuff answer would be, no. It would compromise the sanded grouts' strength.

I have about of 10 lb of unsanded grout left and not enough sanded grout to finish my project. My option is to throw away about 10 lb of unsanded grout and buy a 25 lb bag of sanded grout, or mix 10 lb of unsanded grout with 20 lb of sanded grout and finish my project without spending any more money.

I would buy the grout, rather then compromise the job.
This is not a logical solution.

Ron,

I read few opinions about differences between sanded and unsanded grout. As far as I understand the only real difference is that sanded grout shrinks and unsanded doesn't. In my project I used sanded grout for floor tiling. Now I need grout for wall tiling in 1/8" spaces. I think strength is not an issue here. I can probably just use the rest of unsanded grout for my project instead of mixing it with sanded grout or buying more sanded grout.

Thanks,
Igor

i have added up to 20% non-sanded grout to sanded on vertical applications to make the grout a little more sticky and less messy for the install on 1/8 to 3/16 joints. never had any problems but this was done from start to finish. im sure it would change the appearance/texture of the grout some in you situation. if i were you, i would just buy some more grout.

It might work,but I wouldn't try it.

If you had ever ripped out a bad grout job and regrouted you would say the same thing,I'm sure.

The cost of failure is so high that the $20 for the right stuff should not even be a thought.---Mike--
