butt joint pre-fab laminate countertop
We bought pre-fab laminate countertops and have to use a butt joint because our counter is longer than the standard 10' length. We dediced to place the seam at the sink so it wll be small and less noticable. Now we don't know how to tighten the seam in front of the sink since it is so narrow. Make sense? Help please!

Are you familiar with the draw-bolts used to join counters?

Having installed a few of the premade I know that there is very little left after installing a standard sink. It takes a lot of skill to fit them in from front to back. Think you will need to move your seam.

Personally I try to keep joints away from sinks simpley because water and particle board edges don't mix. The joint will swell when it gets wet. The other reason for keeping it away from sinks is that there is not enough material left in front and rear for bolts after making the sink cut out. You're best bet (to get a long lasting top) is to pay the few extra dollars and have a top made which will fit your run. By doing this you also have much more choice of color and /or finish than the big box stores offer.
