Bathroom Exhaust Requirements

Have been renovating an old house and we were told that when we redo the baths if it has a tub or shower unit the exhaust needs to vent to the exterior of the building but if the bath only has a toilet and sink we can vent the exhaust to the attic. Since then I have been told that ALL bath exhaust fans need to vent to the exterior of the structure. Our local building codes don't address the issue. Can someone with knowledge on this steer me straight! I'd much rather do the former than the later if I can. Thanks!

All bath fans must exhaust to the exterior. Think about it, do you want to add moisture to your attic in the winter, or possible foul odors anytime at all? If your local code does not address it common sense should.
I remember seeing vent hoses from bathrooms stapled to the roof just below a roof vent years ago. I doubt that would pass todays code or the AHJ of any municipality in todays environment.
