Addind a steam generator to existing shower

I WANT TO INSTALL A STEAM GENERATOR IN AN EXISTING TUB/SHOWER MADE OF COMPOSITION MARBLE. THE SURROUND IS ALSO MADE OF THE COMPOSITION MARBLE AND EXTENDS TO 16 INCHES BELOW THE CEILING. THE 16 INCHES AND CEILING ARE DRYWALL. CAN I INSTALL 1/4 INCH HARDIE BOARD OVER THE REMAINING SURROUND AND CEILING, TAPE IT AND PAINT IT WITH A WATERPROOF PAINT? THE MARBLE SURROUND WAS INSTALLED OVER THE DRYWALL SO THERE IS A "STEP" FOR THE HARDIE BOARD TO REST ON.
