Add shower to Half Bath on the first floor?

We are expanding our small half bath that is in our hall on the first floor. Does it make sense or is it weird if we put in a shower? Does it help our house value - the we'd have 3 baths instead of 2.5? Or is it really weird to go into someone's guest bath on the first floor and find a shower?

Thoughts?

DH says it's weird. I think, I think that it's pointless to add space and not add a shower.

Makes perfect sense , an angle base corner shower doesn't take up much space and with glass enclosure it visually keeps space open.

It is common to offer a tub/shower in a main floor bathroom when doing new construction.
Only thing to consider is whether or not your home or neighborhood will actually encourage this kind of upgrade. If no other homes in your area offer the same, you may not make the investment back for resale. Although, I would believe it would help with the ability to sell.

Is the guest bedroom on the 1st floor, or is it more like a colonial, where that 1/2 bath is really the "powder room?"

If the latter, adding a shower is downright silly. Better to build a very smartly appointed spacious 1/2 bath and invest your money in high quality marble or granite and furniture-grade vanity.

There is no guest room on the first floor, except when DH's frat boys stay over - they will sleep on anything, sofas, recliners, dog beds.

is a powder room only a powder room if it contains a lav and a toilet?

Better yet, if you put a shower in a powder room does it loose its ability to powder?

PRO or CON: showers should go in Powder Rooms.
