12"x12" Tile Layout on SMALL (15"x24") Countertop?

Hey everyone,

Mike here.

I'm doing 12"x12" granite tiles on 2 very small countertops that reside on the left and the right of my stove.

I know there are general "rules" for laying tile that maximize the aesthetic value, but I don't know what they are in this case.

The countertop on the RIGHT of the stove is 15" wide x 24" deep. Do I want to front and CENTER the first 12x12" tile and then put 2 small strips to the left and right then work my way back to complete it (2 grout lines running front to back, more symmetrical)? Or do I want to put the first 12x12" tile all the way to the front and the LEFT then (1) 3"strip to the right (1 grout line running front to back, kind of asymmetrical but no small "slices").

The situation's the same on the left side countertop, just reversed.

I have no idea what the "correct" way to do it is, or what a pro would do here.

Any thoughts?

What about a decorative border?

No, I don't want to do a decorative border. I just want to know if I should center the tile and put thin, 1.5" strips on the left and right, or I set the first tile shifted to left and then place a single 3 inch strip to the right of it. Thanks though.

To add to your confusion, how about two 7.5 inch tiles side by side with one grout line down the middle.

I think I like the sound of the large tile with the strips better than the two small tiles. Another possibility might be if you could find bigger tiles in the same finish -- you could cut a tile to the width of the cabinet and 12" deep.

A couple of other possibilites:

For the least amount of cutting, put the first full tile in the front, next to the stove, with the small piece on the outside. Reverse it on the back, with the small piece next to the stove and the full tile on the outside.


You might also play around with the idea of putting them on the diagonal, although this would greatly complicate the cutting.
