Will I make a clog worse by snaking?

I have a bathroom sink drain that is clogged. It runs down from the second floor to the basement where it ties into the main waste. All other drains in house work fine. I opened the drain near the sink and can run the snake all the way to near the main pipe but it stops. I'm concerned that by snaking it any further it will push the blockage into the main pipe (4" cast iron I think) and clog it. I find ony rust on the end of the snake when I pull it out after sending it as far as I can.
Am I worrying over nothing or can you make the problem worse by pushing a clog farther down a drain? Thanks in advance for any advice offerred!

How would pushing a clog down a 1-1/2 or 2" line to a bigger 3 or 4" line plug it up?
100% sure the snake when down and not up into the vent line?

Will I make a clog worse by snaking?

I know the snake didn't go back up the vent because I can hear it rattling in the pipe in the basement. I understand what you are saying about pushing a smaller clog into a bigger pipe but what if the debris is something that doesn't break up well. Any worries about it just sitting in the bigger main pipe obstructing flow and collecting more debris? Since it appears to be rusty debris coming off the end of the snake it doesn't look like it's hair/paper...etc so any concern about this sitting in the larger pipe over time? Thanks for your reply!

I suppose thoretically, maybe a toy or something that could then lodge accross your main.... but I think the chances are extreemly slight, and what else are you going to do anyway.... and if it did not clear and plugged the main.. at worse you'd have to snake with a cutter the main.

Good point. I guess I have no other choice. I'll continue snaking and hope I can get through it. Thanks.

If you're having trouble snaking, have you tried any chemicals

Dont use chemicals. Think of a bottle with an open bottom. Your snake is now in the neck, which is a one lane road. Your clog is about to hit the freeway. Snake it, then fill up the tub, then flush every fixture above the clog at close to the same time and sent it packing on the crest of a Tsunami.

Eloquently and poetically stated...

I'd rather snake it too... just sounds like she's having trouble reaching the clog... getting no debris back on end of snake.

Keep cabling, push it all the way to the main. You'll be allright.

Bear in mind if you've got really old plumbing that's rusting out you could end up damaging it. Granted this is usually only an issue at the thin metal of the traps under the sink or in-line from a tub or shower. So don't let your frustration get the better of you when manhandling the snake...
