Why isn't a 2-1/2" nipple 2-1/2" long?

Is this a technical thing or is this a made in China thing? Just want to make sure before I go looking for something that doesn't exist...

I havent had to buy a galvanized nipple in years, you use too get them in closed 1 inch inch and a half and so on up to 12 inches. but 2.5 inches is just that.

Typically, when you talk about nipples.....the 2 1/2" refers to the diameter....you have close nipples...long nipples....big nipples (oooppppssss, sorry, wrong nipple). A close nipple is going to be just long enough to get the proper amount of threads on each end....the larger the diameter, the longer it's going to be.

A 1/2" nipple 2 1/2" long will measure 2 1/2" long including 3/4" thread on each end. So if you measure 2 1/2" between both female fitting you will need a 4" nipple I believe. It has been a long time since cut pipe.

if you measure between fittings you add 3/8-1/2 for each end. depends on how the dies were adjusted when the threads were cut. some used to thread in 1/2 inch and some were tighter at only 3/8 threaded in. a 2-1/2 inch nipple measures 2-1/2 inches long.

So if specs call for a 2-1/2" nipple it should be exactly 2-1/2" long? Using 1/2" pipe. Measured, it's 2-3/8"

I got stung by a kohler measurement before so need to know if they may want it exactly 2-1/2"?

A nipple or pipe is measured end to end. But you field measure for cutting center-center or face-face of fittings and deduct/add the make up or take off of the fittings.
Line up several 1/2 x 2 1/2 nipples and they will vary in length up to a 1/4"

Changes a lot depending on where you get them from too. We had some that were + 1/4 from one outfit, and some that were - 1/8 from another. Sometimes having different lengths other than the standard 1/2" increments helps a lot when the tile guy bends you over the shower seat.

So of course I finally installed the showerhead that used those 2-1/2" nipples that were 2-3/8" low and behold I needed the nipple to be exactly 2-1/2" The 1/8" caused waterway to interfered with escutcheon.

I'm technically done with the plumbing part of our house remodel but I should have bought a hand pipe threader. Kept it or eBay.
