White stuff around faucets...

A water softener salesman said I had incredibly hard water and pointed out some white stuff around the water faucet as evidence of that.

The guy at the Water Department said the water is not particularly hard and the white stuff comes from the water heater and doesn't mean anything at all.

The salesman acknowledges my water isn't as hard as he thought; claims he is the president and rarely does tests, so the chemicals in his trunk were expired.

But that leaves me wondering about the white stuff. Why should the water heater do that?

I believe that is calcium build up and is a sign of having hard water.

Water is H2O plus all sorts of minerals---that white stuff is nothing to worry about---tile cleaner or vinegar will make it go away----

You may be working with a silver tongued devil----a slick talker---get a hardness test done by someone who is not selling anything---then judge----

You can buy DIY water testing kits - I think Home Depot sells them. If you truly have hard water, there would probably be scale inside your dishwasher and your glasses would be spotted after washing them.
