Whirlpool Tub drainage to PVC trap

Hi to all. Is it okay to connect the whirlpool pool over flow and drainage pipe that is brass, to the pvc trap? Thanks Also how deep should the pipe go into the pvc trap? Thanks

Should be acceptable with these two materials.

Depends - but about 3/4 of an inch depending on diameter.

You might need to buy a brass slip joint nut and a tubular style slip joint washer. Don't overtighten it!

Sometime the plastic nuts and washers used with all-PVC components don't want to seal properly to the brass. Test well before deciding if you have a leak or not, especially if this is not an easily accessible area.

Did you run 2" or 1-1/2" for that tub line?

Hey Ron, Thanks for asking. Well I ran 2inc for all drain and vent. I am at the tub end with a 2 inc pipe next to the whirlpool. What size of p trap should I use? The whirlpool drain and over flow is brass, is a special drain for this tub and had to order since hd didn't have it in stock. Thanks so much, was busy framing and sheetrocking, and getting to the point to closing up the bathroom real soon. Also what's usually the size on the drain pipe from the tub? Should I go with a 2inc, 1 1/2, 1 1/4 p trap? I am just throwing numbers, I don't know what's the actual sizes are on these p traps. Thanks Ron, Should I change from 2 inc to 1 1/2 right next to the tub where the p trap will go, and install a 1 1/ p trap? All inputs are welcomed. I have taken your suggestions on everything else.

Line is 2" so make the trap 2" and bush it down to 1-1/2" on the inlet side of it, then glue in a 1-1/2" male trap adaptor, the trap adaptor will let you connect the assembly to it.

Hey Ron, is this what I am looking for, besides a 2 inc to 1 1/2 inlet, or bushing? Let me know, Thanks Also the toilet drain, was it 12 inc from rough wall, or finished wall? Also do you measure from the screw s on the flange, or the middle of the pipe? Thanks

Yes that is the trap adaptor and toilet is 12" from finish wall.

Hey Ron, on this trap adapter what do I use on the threads? Pipe dope? Also on brass drain threads do I use teflon tape? Thanks, getting ready to install the tub, drain pipes in place, and actually did a test fit and everything is looking good. Thanks

On slip joint nuts you don't 'need' to use anything. They don't do the actual sealing, but, I have found that minor defects when they are made (especially in plastic) can keep them from tightening up properly.

I use a small amount of Rector Seal T+2. This is a pipe dope that is compatible with PVC. It has some Teflon in it and allows the threads to move smoothly over any defects and be fully tightened.

You don't need to use it, but I find it helps in some situations. Again, these threads are designed to be dry fit as they do not do form the actual seal. That is the slip joint washer that does that.

Thanks Ron, so am I .. I am remodeling the entire house, it was a handyman special.. I work during the day, so when I come out I do some work, and then full days on the weekends.. Its alot of work, ones I am done with the bathroom I will be moving to the next floor......

Okay, one more question, so on this trap adapter that is PVC, do I use this same slip joint nut that is plastic? The pipe coming into this from the tub drain and overflow is brass, or do I use a brass nut on the plastic with a slip joint washer? Thanks guys... The plastic slip joint nut looks as if the washer is built onto the nut...

Yes use the plastic one.
