Whining toilet.

I am sure this has been asked and answered before but I cannot seem to find the thread.

My toilet moans after flushing and after the tank has finished filling. The moaning lasts anywhere from 30 seconds to 5+ minutes. The moan will go away when I turn on and off the water in the kitchen sink or bathroom sink multiple times and also if I flush. Though if I stop it with flushing it returns again after the tank is done filling. I have seen a problem similar where there is the whine while filling and the assembly in the toilet is usually the fix. This problem is after the filling when the water has stopped.

Help! This is driving us batty and guests think we have ghosts.

It might require a plumber on site for this but I've heard similar problems related to improper or inadequate. plumbing vents

I've seen the water pressure set to high cause this, old steel pipes.
Try one simple trick, partly close the supply valve to the toilet and see if the noise changes.

replace the ballcock (fill valve) and that should fix it.

Thank you joecaption! Turning the valve a fraction of an inch seems to have solved the problem. This has gone on for the last 6 months and the silence is sublime. Also, since I have taken all the credit I am the new hero of the family. :-)

Does your toilet have a ballcock? (rod with float ball on the end) or something else such as a Fluidmaster 400A. I might suggest replacing your fill valve with a Korky Quietfill.
I've seen this happen before with old worn out ballcocks and high water pressure, the diaphragm inside will make a moaning sound during refill.
