Where to place garbage disposal?

I've always seen the garbage disposal installed on the right hand sink (facing the sink). Is there any reason for this? Does it matter?
We have a sink where one basin is deeper than the other. I'm thinking better put the disposal on the deeper basin, otherwise stuff forced down by the disposal may come bubbling up in the other deeper basin?

You can install it on either basin. Make sure the trap arm is low enough to pick up the drain if you use the deep basin.

I have always understood that the drain line for the kitchen sink does not come out in the center of the sink, but 8-10" off center left or right. The garbage disposal goes on the other side of the drain pipe, to make it easier to hook up.

Between the two, I'd connect it to the shallow basin. That will keep the disposal and piping higher up in the cabinet, making more usable space below.

If the output of the disposal ends up in the deeper basin, you plumbed it wrong, or have a big problem elsewhere.

On new work I install them next to the DW. The waste stub out is centered on the opposite bowl. Then I use an end outlet DW drain kit.
By doing this I'm almost guaranteed the DW discharge will be long enough to reach without a splice- but I'm not required to have an airgap either.
Whether it's the high or low only matters if the the drain stub is to high. I rough them in no higher than 16" aff.

Of course, there are some places that use 2 traps under the sink so the drain assembly is a different story...

I'd say it depends on the layout of your kitchen and your own personal preference. I don't think there's anything technical about it. To me, I prefer it on the right and dishwasher on the right. Since dishes tend to pile up in the LH side of the sink. Everything we do as humans seems to be left to right. We read, we write, we work, left to right.

The shallower basin is closer to the d/w. Also it is significantly smaller than the deeper basin. From the comments here I would probably put the disposal on the shallower basin, except for its small size. It seems to me disposal should be in the larger, more heavily used basin.
