Where "exactly" does the shower pan Membrane go?

my upstairs tile shower is leaking in 3 areas through the drywall onto my kitchen table. All three of those areas on the shower threshold.

  • at the base of the threshold where it meets the wall outside of the shower. (the shower door isn't sealed properly and it trickles between the wall and the door onto a crack in the grout)
  • inside the shower and inside the shower door, where the tile going up the threshold meets the tile on top of the threshold. There's a crack in the grout.
  • same place just a bit over.
Can someone help me understand how the water can splash inside the shower, on the inner side of the threshold and leak below if I have a shower pan membrane there? I know there isn't a membrane on the outer side of the shower threshold, but isn't there one inside?
