Whats this pipe for?

We had our house built last year and there's a PVC pipe extruding from the ground just above where the main drain comes out of the house to the septic tank. We also used "form a footer" and I believe that ties into the main line as well. But what is that pipe outside for? It's located on the bottom right of the pic. There's also "future plumbing" or drain stubs located in the basement just on the other side of the wall of the extruding pipe. Would it by chance have anything to do with that?

Most likely, that is a clean out---open it and see---if it is---you can cut it down to a more appealing height and install a new female fitting and cap.

We have five of those things sticking up like that. Yours is probably a cleanout (we have one too), but where we live, inspection points are required at the distribution box and at the end of each lateral in the drain field. A seriously stupid requirement IMO.

Wow that would be an eye sore to have all those sticking up through the yard. Thanks for the info!

Up here we're required to have a main line cleanout within 1m (3') of it's entry point into the house. It is a little high and could be easily adjusted as Mike suggests.

Thanks for the advice. That must be what it is. Adjusting the size shouldn't be an issue, hide it with some landscaping and we'll never know it existed.

It's a cleanout for the septic line. You should not have footer drains connected to the main septic line. Additionally, I would be a bit concerned with the way the cleanout appears to be leaning backwards toward the house. Settling may have occurred causing a negative grade or possible break in the line. Maybe it's just the angle of the picture. Hard to tell.
