what size pipe to use for water main?

My water main is 2" galv. pipe which I think is overkill for the use of bldg at present. My place used to have a laundry mat on first floor and was heated with steam(boilers) a long time ago. When converted to apt's everything was just tied in here and there off the main 2" pipe using some 3/4" copper into 1/2" copper and galvinized pipe feeding the fixtures. Water pressure is excellent in the bldg and I don't want to mess that up.
I'm trying to figure out what size pvc pipe I can replace the 2" galvinized with?

I would use 1" copper with 3/4" feed to each apt meter...3/4 feed main with 1/2 branches to each fixture 3/4 feed to water heater and 3/4 hot main with 1/2" branches to fixtures.. should handle the load.....I would like to know what base pressure is....Iam guessing its fine....

Id say if youre happy with the 2" set up you currently have and the main feeding it can supply it id see about running 2" plastic in to the building then splitting it off and reducing at each meter.
Only thing thats really more expensive is the tap on the main,if you install plastic from main to the meters youre not talking a major price differance for materials versus the 1" and youll already have it in the ground if you ever want to up the service in future without having to redo everything.
