What is this pipe?

So I went to check on my electric water heater in the basement ,when a drop of water hit me on the head. I looked up and this pipe coming from the ceiling

Now, it's not attached to anything(@least from down here). I live in western MA in a Dutch colonial built in 1991.

I've never seen this leak before! Any ideas?

Re: What is this pipe?

Just a guess, but maybe a metal vent pipe for your water heater that has been abandoned due to the newer codes set forth that require horizontal venting. When it gets cold, perhaps there is some condensation going on which would explain the water dripping.........

Looks like drain pipe size. What is above it? Is there an attic? Can you get up there and see if it goes up through the roof?

I agree, and it's going through combustibles, so not exhaust.

Cheers!

Re: What is this pipe?

If that is a open chase from basement to attic it should be sealed at both ends to prevent moist air from the basement migrating up into the attic.
