What kind of Water Softener do I have and how does it work?

We moved into a house a few years ago and a Water Softener was already installed and working. I can hear recharging every few nights at 2:00AM.

It appears that the unit is working as I have to add 3-bags of 40-lbs salt every 7-10 days. I do not know how to adjust the unit for the proper amount of water hardness and salt settings, etc.

This unit is approximately 9-years old and I have only seen the following marking on the water tank. See attached picture.
Any input is appreciated.

You have a Fleck 5600 control head.

You can download literature here:
http://www.pentairwatertreatment.com/en-us/Products/ResidentialControlValves/Fleck+5600.htm

You will need to know the amount of resin and that can be determined by the size of the resin tank.

There should be a label on the resin tank giving the diameter and height but if not you will need to measure.

A 9X48 resin tank holds 1 cubic foot of resin
10 x 44 is 1.25 ft2
10 X 54 tank is 1.5 ft2
12 x 48 is 2 ft2.
8 x 44 is .75 ft2
Each cubic foot is a nominal 32,000 grains capacity.

Can you please resize your picture. It is way too large, and is blowing out the margins.

You use three bags of salt a week?? That seems like way too much. I have very hard water, and my softener barely uses one bag a month.
