What kind of service line to install?

We have recently purchase a commercial building built in the 20's and have opened a restaurant in it. I had to install a backflow valve to bring the water system up to code and found that the 1 inch galvanized service line is very corroded. In fact so corroded that when I removed a union the threads came right off the pipe. The line is about 50 feet long and is one inch. I will probably put galvanized back in, but would like to find out what other options there is. Line pressure runs about 85 pounds, but drops after the backflow valve. The rest of the plumbing in the building is new plastic.

Any help is appreciated.

Bob

If code permits check out sleeved 1-1/4 to 2 inch copper. For commercial you will probably need the bigger pipe for better head and if you run all the way to the city's water main from your building you will eliminate any chance of pipes decaying underground or any lead pipes in the line.

Ayuh,... Don't even Think about it,.... Iron pipe, galvanized or not, is Not the answer...

I'd go with Plastics,... The bigger the better, right to the main if possible...

I've been workin' on this new Army base,... They're laying miles,+ miles of piping for all sorta fluids,...
None of it is Metal,... It's All plastics....
Matter of fact, the Only metal piping I've seen is the Heating,+ Fire Supression systems....

If it's Good enough for Uncle Sam,... It's gotta be the Best there is...

A 60 foot roll of 1 1/4" Type K Copper tubing will run you about $700; and current code probably will require a water service larger than 1 1/4". 100 feet of 1 1/2" poly-pipe (polyethylene) will cost about $100. Check with your local plumbing/building inspector.
