What the heck IS this?

So, this is kind of an addendum to the tub drip. I pulled out the next level of parts and discovered a bunch of metallic junk gunking up the hot water in-pipe. I cleaned it all out of the valves and stuff- as much as I was able ('til it looked totally clean) - (tub's still dripping btw after all that) but now I'm wondering what the heck IS this stuff? At first I thought it was some sort of foil-like stuff, but it's harder than that. Does this indicate something about our water heater or something else? Any input welcome. Thanks.

someone went kinda nuts with the solder when they sweat in the fixture

Ken is correct. I can't help but wonder if the pipes were de-burred.

As for the leak....you could have some of that slag in the valve which is causing the leak. Or the seal may have been damaged by it.

I'm in agreement for sure, that is definitely solder.

I'd recommend getting some help from a friend to turn the water on just a little while you deflect the valve opening with your hand down into the tub so that you don't flood the bathroom with water trying to do it alone. Flush water through the valve a bit to make sure there is no other similar debris in the lines before you take to replacing the cartridge. If you don't flush it out there is a possibility that you may damage a new cartridge later down the line.

Thanks for the input everyone. Yes, so many things in this "new" house were done by the previous owner - an avid DIYer who lots of times seems to be pretty good at a lot of things, but sometimes I find remnants of his not being perfectly on the mark and have to do whatever the job requires to "fix" the problem. OF course, I have to remember that I, too, am a rather stubborn DIYer. I might not solder pipes (yet) but gimme time and who knows.

Home ownership certainly challenges the boundaries of the DIY tendency, for sure. I'm learning new stuff all the time - hopefully not to my eventual detriment. Heck, I've even graduated to building furniture. But that's another story.

For now I'll pull apart everything one more time to see if more slag ended up getting stuck in the valve before I replace more stuff. Hopefully I can rectify this without much greater expense and time.

Thanks for the input folks! This site rocks!
