What does this pump do???

I just bought a home that has some sort of pump hooked up to the bottom of my hot water heater and the pump is wired into a timer switch. (the same type of timer switch that is on my pool pump) I am including a picture of the setup in hopes that someone can tell what it does? The hot water heater is located in my garage. Thanks in advance!

That's a recirculating pump. It moves the hot water throughout the hot water loop to keep the water hot at all your fixtures all the time.

they told you wrong..as stated its a recirculating pump...moves hot water through system ...so when you turn on hot water any where in house there is no waiting for hot water....timer should start pump at certain times as set by installer...ben sr

Thank you both very much for the prompt reply...I promise, last question. The timer currently only has two set points... As of right now, the timer is set to go on at 6am and off at 12a. Is there a benefit to adding additional set points...like "on" a 6am and "off" at 12pm then "on" again at 6p and off at 10P. Or does it not really matter. Thanks again.

What does this pump do???

Jaydevries,

I would even know how to begin to answer your question. Now that I know what the pump is called and what is does, I have found a few installation examples on the internet and they show the pump installed in the same location as mine...Other than that, I have no idea where the pipes go or why it is hooked up like that...One thing I do know is that when I turn the hot water on in any area of the house, the water gets hot instantly.

The return line is piped to the WH drain outlet- the boiler drain is removed and relocated

What does this pump do???

So, the only reamining question is...should the pump be set to run from 6a to 12a. (18 hours) seems i might be able to save on electric if i add some more on/off set points. Thoughts?

When do you get up and when do you go to bed? You have to balance wasting electricity running the pump versus wasting water waiting for hot water. We do not stay up til midnight at my house, but we got kids.

Good lord, I hate those guys. The timer is to save electricity while you are sleeping. Nothing more.

It turns off at night, and turns on during the day when you are more likely to need instant hot water.
