What is this?
Hey folks!

New to home construction and below is a picture from our basement. What is the plumbing within the red box? Our sump pit is in the other corner of the basement, and this "pit" is covered by a screwed down lid. Also, what is the 4" stack sticking up through the concrete? I notice there is a cord coming from the "pit" and there is a discharge(?) line that goes up and dumps into the main sewer line.

Our main sewer drain runs out to the left of the picture and out a line about 1' above the floor.

i/m not a plumber but looks like sewage pump for future basement bath or a weird radon system

It's a ejector pump ,( for the floor drain ,future bath ,laundry tub,) look at it this way any thing thats below were the main drain goes out of house has to be pumped up to exit the house . Kerry

The 4 " pvc sticking up will be for your floor drain it will be cut flush with the concrete and does connect to the ejector pit that it is next to . Kerry

That is a typical rough in for a future bathroom. The 4" pipe is for the toilet. The 2" pipe coming out of the concrete is the toilet vent.

That will save you a bunch of money should you ever wish to make a bathroom!!!!!!!!!

I don't see a back flow valve on the discharge pipe.

Also the builder may have installed a sump pump in the hole--Not the more expensive sewage pump. If you do make a bathroom check the type of pump.

Thanks guys! We had originally opted for the basement rough in, but removed it from our options list at the last minute. The builder wanted just over $3000 for the rough in. We are planning on finishing the basement, and now with that that there, I just may install a 1/2 bath in the process!

Oh'mike- I will definatly check the pump type before anything goes down the toilet!

Thanks again!!
