Wet behind tiled shower walls

I removed some tiles in my shower wall to measure for a new shower floor and in doing so I found the tile backerboard extremely wet. So much so when I was using a hammer to bust out the tile and backer I was getting splashed in the face. Just how wet should the backerboard be? HVAC PRO here but not to familar with tile walls and showers

There should not be one drop of water behind the tile. Sounds like a complete do over on the whole thing, It was built wrong or the grout failed and o one fixed it.

Wet behind tiled shower walls

Thank you, I thought as much, I regrouted last year and there were some strange things happening where the walls and floor meet, the grout kept disappearing down the joint. I have already planned to redo the entire shower. The wife does not want tile so I am ordering a custom one piece solid surface shower floor and walls to match.
