What is the distance from the top of the tank to the resin?
It is the softener resin that came out, and depending on how much as to should more be put in.
Another thing to think of is age of the system, if it is 10+ years and the water that it was treating had chlorine in it or high levels of iron or hardness now might be a time to replace it.
What brand is the system?
