water softener won't work

We bought our house about 6 years ago and our current water softener came with it so I don't know how old it is for sure. A while back I noticed that when taking a shower the water was not softened so I checked the pellets and the level didn't seem to be going down. I hit the manual run switch and it ran fine. I then set it up to run that night and would do that occasionally. When I manually set it to run the water is soft but I don't know why it stopped doing it automatically or what to check. Any ideas? Thanks.

Yes. You may have a salt bridge in your tank. Very common. I would use the end of a broom stick and poke the stick through the salt to the bottom of the tank. You may notice that it doesn't go down all the way. That's the salt bridge that was formed. You need to break it up.

Other than that being the problem, it may just need service on the mechanicals.
