Water Softener wont stop draining help

I had a Kenmore Water Softener 350 series installed about 4 months ago. I was outside and heard the unit draining then I thought to myself, its not set to regenerate till 2am. As I walked over to the unit, the grass was drenched from the water softner itself out to about 7-8 feet.

I immediately pushed the bypass to turn the water flow off. I went to check my water meter and the little triangle is not spinning, once I put the bypass back, the triangle on the meter was spinning like crazy!

I contacted the plumber who sears had do the install and he pretty much said its not an install issue but more of the unit itself not stopping the draining process when it is supposed to. I tried unplugging the power and water is still flowing through it and out the drain pipe.

Could someone help me understand if its the install or unit itself thats causing the problem?

Thanks in advance for any feedback.

Water Softener wont stop draining help

My first thought is that it's not an install issue but rather a machine issue. After the machine finishes it's flushing and drain, it should automatically shut the drain and return to normal operation. It sounds like the machine isn't closing the drain. Most wtr sftnrs use electricity to operate the computer and drive motors to open valves during backflush, drain, etc., but use the water pressure to move the water through the brine, sftnr bed and drain. So if the drain is stuck open somehow, the water pressure is just pushing water through it.
Check the manual and see if your machine has a reset feature, or a manual step by step feature. Usually you can enter manual operation mode and go through the steps one by one. Maybe you can get the valve to close that way (at least for now). Take note of your procedure, as I'm sure you would still have warrenty on the machine.

Thanks for your feedback - I have a sears tech coming out Tuesday to take a look at it. Of course now it is working fine and drain is closed. I still have the bypass on and I unplugged it just in case it happens again. I still hope the tech will be able to fix something since it seems fine now. I would hate to get up at 3am everyday just to make sure its working properly.

If the manual bypass is on, then it shouldn't be getting any water pressure, and hence no flow out the drain. If you can get by for a couple days 'til the tech can look at, good call...leave it unplugged and bypassed.
Good luck...let us know what happens.
