Water Softener Stuck on Brine Rinse...

I have an older Agway single tank water softener. The model number is worn off the unit of course so I have no idea what model it is.

It works fine most of the time but maybe twice a month it was getting stuck in the "Brine Rinse" stage and I would have to manually move the lever to the next stage at which point it would complete its cycle.

Well, it's now doing this every few days so I need to figure out what the cause is. Any suggestions on where to look?

Water Softener Stuck on Brine Rinse...

Photo of unit in question?
It sounds like it could be a gear wheel that has some teeth missing and is stopping there til you turn it..

Water Softener Stuck on Brine Rinse...

Could just be gummed up, too. I had that happen with my old water softener. The motor gets weak and the grease on the gears gets gummy.

If there are no broken teeth, you can try cleaning some of the old grease off the gears and adding some fresh grease. Pay particular attention to where the gears mesh and where the cams rub against the valve levers (depending on how your unit is designed, it might be very different from mine...)
